Ether (ETH, -0.25%) continued its rally on Thursday after the Berlin hard fork on the Ethereum blockchain went live earlier the day, surpassing $2,500 for the first time in history.
- The No. 2 cryptocurrency by market capitalization was traded around $2,498.91 at press time, just slightly down after it briefly went as high as $2,503.92.
- Ether’s price has been outperforming bitcoin (BTC, -1.71%)‘s on Thursday, as the Ethereum blockchain’s much anticipated Berlin hard fork went live early the day.
- The upgrade, which sets up the network for the much bigger London hard fork in July, incorporates four Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs).
- The hype around ether is also reflected in the derivatives market, as open interest in ether’s options market rose to a record high above $3 billion on Wednesday.
- The late-day surge also could be due to news that the Rothschild Investment took at initial $4.75 million stake in the Grayscale Ethereum Trust. Grayscale is owned by CoinDesk parent company Digital Currency Group.

Those are the highlights of a monthly market survey conducted by the German lender March 18-22 of 520 market professionals around the world. Reddit Forum WallStreetBets Allows Crypto Conversation, Immediately Re-Bans It
The Reddit forum famous for making GameStop’s (GME) stock price a household topic has banned all discussion of cryptocurrencies less than 24 hours after tentatively allowing a daily discussion thread, with restrictions. WallStreetBets, a subreddit that describes itself as “like 4chan found a Bloomberg terminal,” has long banned cryptocurrency discussion. It lifted this ban on three cryptocurrencies – bitcoin (BTC, -1.74%), ether (ETH, -0.45%) and dogecoin (DOGE, +87.45%) – though it continued banning “crypto spam” on Wednesday, after Coinbase’s direct public listing. On Thursday, the ban was reinstated, citing the deleterious effects of a Bloomberg article. “Due to the article that…

Bitcoin Traders Brace for Record $6B in Options to Expire Friday
They call it “max pain” in the bitcoin options market: How to make one’s trading counterparty suffer the most. Although the largest cryptocurrency was changing hands Wednesday around $56,500, traders were handicapping the odds of a plunge to about $44,000 by Friday, when a record $6 billion of options contracts is set to expire. A drop to that price level would inflict “max pain” on buyers of options contracts, and it might be the most profitable price point for options sellers. It’s a remote risk, but not one to be discounted. The…
